THE MEANING OF LIFE – epidemics stimulated reflections.

I never write to you here, because I believe the strength of art lies in pictures, not in words.

But being stuck at home, not being able to dance or just go out to see other people, I find myself working intensely, obsessively, in order to finish all the designs, bring them to life, and in doing so I act just like other artists for centuries, when their life could or did come to an end.

And in this frantic attempt to complete… complete what… my artistic legacy… I just stumbled over the question of the meaning of life.

I am quite a down-to-earth, reasonable person; I own a more scientific, than literary or romantic mind. So, I tend to get my hands dirty and do things, rather than consider their cosmic relevance.

But when I am facing an immediate danger to my life, and the life of my dear ones, it is hard not to draw some conclusions. It’s hard not to wonder what this all was worth, all my efforts, everything, if I die just now, this month.

Many artists probably place the value of their life in their artistic creations, in adding to the general creative output of human civilisation. So, when they die, their works live on, which makes their life meaningful, preserved.

I am not one of those people.

I believe that creating art is just producing items. A painting, just like a hammer, or a house, is an item that will perish in time, even if it makes someone happy or stirs some whimsical emotions – it is a mortal object.

For most people, the meaning of life is in raising their children – but I don’t have children.

So where is this sense of living?

Is it in romantic love, or looking after my partner?

Well, no, I believe it is not.

I was alone for many years of my life, and my life was not in any way less meaningful than now. Really, not one iota.

So, what is it that makes any sense of my life? What makes using the energy that I need to walk and work in any way meaningful or valuable?

Well, surprisingly to me, and probably to you as well – my sense of life is in the fact that I adopt rabbits.

Not that I have a bunch of them, no, I have one at a time. I take them from people who hurt them, or abandon them and turn their life into hell. I adopt adult rabbits that stopped entertaining their owners as toys, and became useless, stinky burdens.

I take them home, care for them, share my living space with them, cure them, calm their nerves, remove the stress, heal their mind. I create for them a peaceful asylum, without fear, respecting their needs and habits. And for the short time of their existence, I become their entire universe, the only one they will ever have.

For my rabbits, I am the ultimate God; I am the food provider, the carer, the companion of their castrated solitude, their trusted friend that they turn to in the moments of crisis, the bestower of tenderness and affection.

And finally, at the end of their life, when they are old and suffering, I become death.

SENS ŻYCIA – przemyślenia w trakcie epidemii

Nigdy tu do was nie piszę, ponieważ sądzę, że siła sztuki leży w obrazach, nie w słowach.

Ponieważ zamknięto mnie w domu, nie mogę ani tańczyć, ani nawet wyjść na spotkanie z innymi ludźmi, pracuję intensywnie i bezustannie, obsesyjnie starając się skończyć wszystkie rozpoczęte projekty i wprowadzić je w życie.
Myślę, że w tym natarczywym działaniu jestem podobna do wielu innych artystów tworzących przez stulecia, do całych ich rzeszy, którzy czynili tak samo, myśląc, że ich życie może się nagle skończyć.

I w tej szalonej próbie dokończenia… dokończenia… mojej artystycznej spuścizny… stanęłam przed pytaniem o sens życia.

Jestem logiczną, rozsądną osobą; mój umysł określiłabym raczej jako ścisły, niż humanistyczny czy romantyczny. Raczej biorę się do roboty i robię różne rzeczy, niż dywaguję nad istotą sensu ich istnienia w skali kosmosu.

Kiedy jednak stoję w obliczu bezpośredniego zagrożenia dla mojego życia i życia moich bliskich, trudno nie pokusić się o jakieś konkluzje. Trudno się nie zastanawiać, co to wszystko jest warte, wszystkie moje wysiłki, wszystko, co robię i robiłam, jeśli umrę teraz — już w tym miesiącu.

Domyślam się, że dla wielu artystów sensem życia jest ich twórczość, to ich wkład w kreatywną spuściznę ludzkości. A kiedy umierają, ich dzieła żyją dalej, co nadaje znaczenie ich życiu i w pewnym sensie ich unieśmiertelnia.

Ale to nie ja, ja totalnie tego tak nie postrzegam.

Wierzę, że tworzenie sztuki to na dobrą sprawę wytwarzanie przedmiotów. Obraz, podobnie jak młotek lub dom, to przedmiot, który z czasem zginie, nawet jeśli sprawi komuś radość lub wzbudzi jakieś ulotne emocje — jest to jednak przedmiot śmiertelny.

Dla większości ludzi sensem życia jest wychowywanie dzieci — ale ja nie mam dzieci.

Więc gdzie jest ten sens życia?

Może jest w romantycznej miłości, w trosce o partnera, we wspólnym przeżywaniu czasu?

Nie, przynajmniej nie dla mnie.

Przez wiele lat byłam samotna i wiem, że moje życie nie było wtedy w żaden sposób mniej sensowne czy znaczące, niż jest teraz. Naprawdę, nie było ani trochę.

Co więc ma sens w moim życiu? Co sprawia, że zużywanie energii, której potrzebuję, aby chodzić i pracować jest w jakikolwiek sposób znaczące lub cenne?

Wynik moich przemyśleń, będzie dla was pewnie równie zaskakujący, jak był dla mnie.

Otóż, moim zdaniem, sensem mojego życia jest to, że adoptuję króliki.

Nie, nie mam całego stada tych królików. Mam zawsze tylko jednego. Biorę je od ludzi, którzy je porzucili lub skrzywdzili, tym samym zmieniając ich życie w piekło. Adoptuję dorosłe króliki, które dla ich poprzednich opiekunów przestały spełniać swoją rolę zabawki, znudziły się i stały się bezużytecznymi, śmierdzącymi balastami.

Wtedy ja zabieram je do mojego domu, gdzie dzielę się z nimi moją przestrzenią; spokojnie i cierpliwie usypiam stres, wyciszam agresję, leczę ich ciało i umysł. Tworzę dla nich bezpieczny azyl bez strachu, gdzie respektowane są ich potrzeby i zwyczaje. Przez krótki czas ich istnienia, ja i mój dom stajemy się dla nich całym wszechświatem, jedynym wszechświatem, jaki kiedykolwiek będą miały.
Dla moich królików ja jestem najwyższym Bogiem, jestem karmicielką, opiekunką i jedynym towarzyszem ich wykastrowanej samotności. Staję się zaufanym przyjacielem, do którego się zwracają w chwilach kryzysu i który obdarza je czułością i troską.

I wreszcie, pod koniec ich życia, kiedy są stare i cierpiące, wtedy również ja staję się ich śmiercią.
